so we had a big first during our stay in indiana... our first night away from ellery! this was a big thing for me, and i had been thinking about it so much the weeks (okay, months) leading up to the big night. i don't know why i was worried. she was in more than wonderful hands, as kyle's mom & dad took care of her. but i stressed about having enough milk for e (i pumped for what seemed like months. definitely a labor of love. but in the end, we had the perfect amount!). ellery loves to wake up during the night, and can be a tiny bit fussy before going to bed, and i would have loved to have her more on a night "routine." i didn't want them to be up all night. i wanted to make it as easy as possible for them and ellery. basically, i just wanted everything to be perfect as we handed her off to papa and momo. and guess what, it was better than i could have planned. i know she was covered in love and hugs and kisses the whole time we were gone. even if she cried, it was pure joy for them to sing and rock and dance with her to calm her down. so blessed by them. thank you for loving our sweet girl so well. i know she loved every second. and even though i did let a little tear fall down my cheek as we waved goodbye to go on a little date day, i was beyond excited to spend time alone with kyle!
so enough of my blubbering mom talk, on to the romantic trip!! kyle and i headed down to bloomington, indiana to visit kyle's brother kris at indiana university. sounds super romantic, right?? well, we did stop at a beautiful winery along the way called oliver winery. we've always wanted to do a wine tasting, but never had, so we thought, what a perfect time! the grounds of the winery were so pretty, with a beautiful garden out front.
we walked in, pretending like we had some clue about wine, but really we just normally get the cheapest riesling at the store whenever we do have wine. thankfully, the people working there were very nice and super knowledgeable. we paid $5 each to taste 8 wines, which was a lot of fun and pretty informative. i liked the semi-sweet and sweet wines, mostly whites. kyle was all about the red wines. by the end, we both agreed we could like one with catawba grapes (it was actually one of my favs and kyle was sweet enough to agree to get it!). it was a fun little stop along the way. now we're ready to tackle one item on kyle's bucket list - tour wine country by bike!
so off to iu we went! we stayed at the biddle hotel, located in the student union on campus. it was a pretty room but not the best location... we looked out our hotel room door and we were steps away from the bookstore. kids would walk by and say, woah are we like in the hotel?? yes, indeed you are. so that was interesting. we walked around campus and i must say i think miami wins out for being prettier. but iu is huge. which i love since going on long walks is one of my favorite things to do.
kris finished with class around 7, so after that we headed to his fraternity house - delta tau delta. he gave us the tour (i am now convinced all frat houses must have the distinct smell of stale beer), and really, his house was pretty nice. a whole lot nicer than the theta chi house at miami. then the three of us headed to dinner.
then, the rest of the night, kyle and i set out to prove even though we are married, have a baby, and are in the category of "old" if you asked a college, that we still "have" it. that we can still have fun. and hang out with the kids. well, we did it. we stayed awake (which this is a huge deal!) until 2am. we visited the iu theta chi house. i met a sophomore girl that was an alpha chi, who also thought kyle was my boyfriend. (which, hey, he is). we met kris' sweet girlfriend and awesome buddies. and we also put a guy in his place who made fun of ellery's name. oh, and at the end of the night, we also got to hang out with the cast of young frankenstein.
all in all, though we totally felt old the next day, we had a lot of fun visiting kris. and though we had a blast, we were excited to get back to ellery, too. all three of us survived our first night apart :)
